-- Senior-Level Advocacy Position Available Fall 2002--  



The K-12 Testing Reform Director will work closely with FairTest’s 
Executive Director to design and implement strategies to stop 
testing abuses and promote improved assessment at national, state 
and local levels. This will include directing the national Assessment 
Reform Network (ARN).  

FairTest is the country’s sole national advocacy organization 
focused on eliminating barriers to equity and excellence in public 
education created by the misuse and overuse of standardized 
exams. ARN is a network of parent, educator and civil rights 
individuals and groups working to stop testing abuses and promote

Responsibilities include:  

- Create and implement strategic plans for K-12 assessment 
reform.  

- Direct and further develop national Assessment Reform Network.  

Assist grassroots organizing, coalition building, and public 
education campaigns around the nation, including Massachusetts, 
and work to influence policymakers.  

Help train community activists to implement reform agendas.  

Maintain/expand listservs and website 
(http://www.fairtest.org/arn/arn.htm ).  

Research/write fact sheets, action-oriented reports, how-to-do-it 
manuals, newsletter articles, other materials on testing, its impact, 
alternatives, and how to win changes.  

Speak to assemblies of activists, parents, educators, and policy-
makers.  

Respond to information requests from journalists, public officials, 
parents, teachers.  




Track-record of accomplishments as strategist/organizer/coalition 
builder in advocacy campaigns necessary, as are strong writing, 
public speaking, interpersonal skills.  

Knowledge of testing/assessment or related educational issues 
very valuable.  

Strong writing skills essential, strong speaking skills important.  

Experience with media valuable.  

Experience educating/training other organizers/activists valuable.  

Experience in developing web-based materials a plus.  

Must be able to work productively in both independent and 
collaborative settings.  

- Based in Cambridge, MA, the job involves moderate amounts of 
air travel.  

Salary and Benefits  

Salary in $40s, depending on experience. Four weeks vacation.
