The Independent Television Service has a documentary on Saul Alinsky. http://www.itvs.org/programs/summary_prog.html
Abstract: The Democratic Promise: Saul Alinsky and His Legacy Bob Hercules Documentary 56:40
Legendary organizer Saul Alinsky led the movement to empower disenfranchised communities through collective action. Now others have taken up the challenge. The Democratic Promise examines Alinsky's life and adaptive legacy through work being done by two contemporary "people's organizations". --- The Film and Video Library at the University of Michigan maintains a website, "Remote Resources on Film, Video and Television," with many useful links, at http://asa.ugl.lib.umich.edu/libhome/FVL.lib/remote.html --- The National Film Board of Canada at http://www.nfb.ca/E/index.html

At the University of Houston (where I was a student in the late 80's-90's) we had the Alinsky film series in our library. (As a matter of fact, at one point I was the first person to request them in 20 years). They are *great* and I know that one of my former professors there, Robert Fisher, in the Grad School of Social Work now uses them for some of his classes.
I too would love to hear if anyone knows how they may be obtained on video.

A good source for hard-tp-find documentaries is First Run/Icarus Films, at 153 Waverly Place, 6th Floor, New York City, NY 10014 (tel. 212.727.1711; fax: 212.989.7649; email FRIF@ECHONYC.COM). The most current catalogue I have doesn't include the Alinsky films, but they get new stock all the time, and judging from what they do carry, I would imagine that people there would be interested in tracking down the films in question.

Andy Van Kleunen asks about the Canadian Broadcast Corporation films about Saul Alinsky produced in the 1960s.
I cannot answer his question about the availability of the films themselves, but the transcripts of the films are available from the CAN Organize Training Center (OTC). Information on price and ordering is included the the OTC publications list, available at

Hi. Probably someone has informed you by now, but most of the CBC documentaries can be found at the National Archives, Film Div. in Ottawa.
Good luck.

I know the Sedgewick/Koerner Library at UBC (phone (604) 822 5424) has good copies of at least 2 or 3 of those videos. They are undergoing major facilities changes at the present time. Regards, Gerardo Maupome

hi folks:
I have transcripts for the alinsky films; you can write to the National Film Board of Canada for them, for a nominal fee. I believe that the NFBC has an office in NYC, where you can view the films as well. there are a few which are also available at university libraries -- check RLIN. I'm not at my office at the moment; when I've got the specifics in front of me, I'll post something.
